When free collection applies
Free collection is available when you prepay 3 or more months.
It applies to room sized units from 15 to 250 sq ft. It does not apply to lockers or half height units.
If you are not sure what size you need, use our guide to choosing the right unit size before you book.
What to do next
If you want free collection in London, follow this order:
- Get a quote and reserve your unit size (15 to 250 sq ft)
- Book your collection date and time with your local Henfield branch
- Tell us about access (stairs, lifts, parking limits, long carries)
- Line up the right number of helpers for loading (see below)
- Pack everything ready to move so the team can load efficiently
If anything about access or the items is unusual, mention it when you book and the branch will confirm what is workable.
What is included in free collection
Henfield handles:
- The van and transport
- A uniformed team member on the day, who will help from start to finish with loading and unloading
- Moving your items to the nearest Henfield facility
You handle:
- Having items packed and ready
- Providing access at the collection address (or arranging access for click+store)
- Providing the required number of helpers for loading
Do I need to be there on collection day?
Yes. You’ll need to be present on collection day, though what happens afterwards depends on which service you choose.
If you are using self storage
Yes. You’ll need to be present at the collection address to provide access and supply the agreed number of helpers for loading. At the Henfield facility, all helpers will need to meet us to help unload. You’ll then lock your unit and complete the paperwork.
If you are using click+store
Yes. You’ll need to be present on the day to provide access to the items and help with loading. From there, Henfield takes care of storage on your behalf.
If you are deciding between the two, click+store vs self storage is the quickest way to compare how they work day to day.
Helper requirements for loading
Free collection is a shared loading process, with a Henfield team member loading alongside your helpers to keep things safe and efficient.
Helper requirements depend on your unit size:
- Under 50 sq ft: you provide 1 helper
- 50 to 90 sq ft: you provide 1 additional helper
- 100 sq ft or more: you provide 2 additional helpers
Your helpers can be you, a friend, or anyone you trust, as long as they are comfortable lifting.
If you cannot provide helpers, Henfield can supply additional hands for a fee. Contact your local branch and we will quote it.
If you want to check the numbers quickly, how many helpers you need for free collection is explained here.
Where London moves usually get stuck
1) Access restrictions
London properties often have tight stairs, narrow hallways, awkward lifts, parking limits, or a long walk from the street. These details change how quickly loading can happen.
When you book, tell the branch about anything that could slow loading so the team can plan properly.
2) Booking the wrong unit size
Collection does not fix a unit that is too small, or one that is far bigger than you need. We’ll always try be flexible on the day and and get you in the right size unit, subject to availability.
Before you book, sense check your size with our space estimator.
3) Assuming “free” means no work on the day
Free collection takes care of the van and transport, but you’ll still need to have items packed and ready, provide access, and arrange helpers for loading.
Collection vs hiring a van in London
If you’re comparing your options, it’s worth looking beyond the storage price alone and thinking about the practical side of the move.
Hiring a van in London can involve parking restrictions, time pressure, congestion charges, and doing all the lifting yourself. Free collection removes the need to hire and drive a van, but you’ll still need to plan access at the property and arrange helpers for loading.
If you are weighing up transport, it helps to compare van hire with free collection.
How to compare the real cost
Two quotes can look similar while the real cost and effort are very different.
A simple way to compare is to list what you would need to pay for or organise if you did it yourself (van, fuel, congestion, parking, time, and labour), then compare that with a collection based option.
To compare properly, add it up as the total cost of storage, not just the headline rent.
If you want us to sense check a quote, contact your local branch and we will talk it through.
